What are bay windows?

A bay window is a combination of three or more individual window units that are connected and fitted to a section of brickwork* that projects out from the main wall or walls of your home.

A popular feature of homes across Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and surrounding areas since the end of the 19th century, installing a bay window is an easy, cost-effective way to maximise the level of natural light in a room, and add valuable extra living space to your home without having to undergo major house extension or renovation work.

The window units used for your bay window can be any style (from stormproof casement windows and flush casement windows, to sliding sash windows and tilt and turn windows) and any frame material (from uPVC and aluminium, to timber and timber alternative), to tie in with your existing windows or stand out proudly and make a strong style statement. They can also be fitted in differently shaped configurations to create a splay bay, circular bay, square bay, or single bend bay – although the configuration and size are typically determined by your home’s existing brickwork projection.

With the widest range of customisation options of all our windows, the design possibilities are enormous, and there are no limitations to the homes that our bay windows suit, from contemporary right the way through to traditional.

*Please note that if you haven’t got an existing bay window, then fitting a bay will not simply be a replacement window job – construction work will be required prior to the installation of your bay window. Whilst we do not carry out construction work ourselves, we are happy to help with this and have a trusted local builder we often work alongside and frequently recommend.

Splay bay window, consisting of three white uPVC casement window units – two slimmer, angled, operable sashes, with one wider, central, fixed/dummy sash.
Slim, angled, openable white uPVC stormproof casement window.
Optional trickle vents for better ventilation.
Optional Georgian bars to add character.
Large central white uPVC dummy sash allows natural light to flood into the room, making the living space bright and airy.
Brickwork protrudes out from the main walls of the house, creating a base for the bay window to be installed on as well as creating additional living space and opening up the room.

One of the most popular styles of bay window on modern homes are splay bay windows, consisting of three window units – typically two angled operable sashes, with one central fixed/dummy sash, as pictured above.

Safety and security

In addition to frame composition and glazing, window safety and security is largely dependent upon the locking and hinge mechanisms fitted.

Whichever window style and material you choose for your bay, all truhouse. bay windows are composed of robust multichambered profiles and fitted with the latest high security multipoint locking mechanisms and metal anti-jemmy hinge bolts to prevent your windows being forced open. With each side of the opening sash fully secured with the turn of a handle or closing of a fastener, our bay windows ensure your home is protected against potential intruders.

High security fire escape hinges, also known as egress friction hinges, are fitted on hinged window units as standard, providing you with maximum clearance in the event you need to exit through your window in an emergency (dependent on window size).

Child safety hinges, known as tri-stay fire escape hinges, are also available on request, with a built in restrictor function to prevent children opening and falling out of windows (or even climbing in through open windows).
