What are casement windows?

Casement windows, also referred to as lipped casement windows or stormproof windows, are hinged on one side of the frame and open outward with a push out motion/operation. Different to flush casement windows, the edge of the sash (the opening part of the window) has a lip that sits proud of (overlaps) the surrounding frame.

Casement windows were originally designed in the 1950s to offer a solution to the problem that affected many early designs of flush casement windows; leakage. The lipped edge of the casement window prevented the sash from going further into the frame (forcing it to sit on the face of the frame) and added an additional layer of sealing and protection from the rain – hence often being described as stormproof casement windows. Although advances in modern technology have eliminated the issue of leaking with flush casement windows, casement windows still remain the most popular style of window in the UK market to date.

With each and every casement window made to measure by our team of specialists and tailored to complement your property and personal taste, there are no limitations to the homes that they suit. Some of the properties that we’ve installed casement windows in include new build, modern, and contemporary homes and apartments, as well as period and traditional homes.

The choice is endless, as is our devotion to you and your household efficiency and security.

Thicker styling gives a more classic look.
Neat, clean lines and a proud finish.
Optional trickle vents.
Optional astragal bars.
Visible lip. Sash doesn’t close flush into the outer frame, overlapping the face of the window when closed.
Smooth welded (diagonal/arrow) joints. Traditional mechanical (90° block) joints also available.

Safety and security

In addition to frame composition and glazing, window safety and security is largely dependent upon the locking and hinge mechanisms fitted.

Whichever material you choose, all truhouse. casement windows are composed of robust multichambered profiles and fitted with the latest high security multipoint locking mechanisms (shootbolt espagnolettes, bidirectional cams, roller cams, and shootbolt locks) that engage on three sides of the opening sash. Metal anti-jemmy hinge bolts are installed on the remaining side to prevent your hinges being forced open. With each side of the opening sash fully secured with the turn of a handle, our casement windows ensure your home is protected against potential intruders.

High security fire escape hinges, also known as egress friction hinges, are fitted as standard, providing you with maximum clearance in the event you need to exit through your window in an emergency (dependent on window size).

Child safety hinges, known as tri-stay fire escape hinges, are also available on request, with a built in restrictor function to prevent children opening and falling out of windows (or even climbing in through open windows).
