What are Sash Windows?

Sash windows, also referred to as sliding sash windows, vertical sliding windows or vertical sliders, are windows with two sashes (the opening part of a window) that open by being slid up or down vertically within the surrounding frame. The only style of window that can be opened at both the top and the bottom, sash windows provide great ventilation, as warm air is drawn out of the top while cooler air is drawn in through the bottom.

Your choice of traditional pulley and weights system or more modern spring/spiral balance system is concealed within the frame and perfectly counteracts the weight of the sliding sash panel, to create smooth and effortless operation, and keep the sashes open at your desired height. Optional pivot bars can be built into the sashes to allow for a tilt function – great for ventilation or easy cleaning at the push of a button.

Frequently found in listed Georgian or Victorian buildings, truhouse. sash windows are designed to blend traditional Victorian styling and elegance with modern performance, delivering a low maintenance, authentic look with the superior energy efficiency and security assurance that you should demand from new window installations.

With each and every window made to measure by our team of specialists and tailored to complement your property and personal taste, there are no limitations to the homes that our sliding sash windows suit. Some of the properties that we’ve installed in include new build or modern homes, period or traditionally styled townhouses and cottages, conservation area (where timber or conservation approved uPVC windows are installed), and graded properties (where timber has been installed).

The choice is endless, as is our devotion to you and your household efficiency and security.

Safety & Security

Window safety and security is largely dependent upon the locking and hinge mechanisms fitted.

tru. security

Safety & Security

In addition to frame composition and glazing, window safety and security is largely dependent upon the locking and hinge mechanisms fitted.

Whichever material you choose, all truhouse. sliding sash windows are composed of robust multichambered profiles and fitted with multiple locking mechanisms and security features, with the option to add additional security-enhancing accessories to achieve Secured by Design status.

Two fasteners are installed on the midrail (where the two sashes meet) to lock the two sashes in place when closed.

Metal anti-jemmy bars are fitted to the sliding sash window’s mechanism to reinforce it and prevent the sashes from being levered open, reducing the chance of forced entry and intrusion.

Friction hinges are fitted to both sides of each sash as standard, enabling you to tilt both sashes inwards for full and easy cleaning from inside your home, whilst securing them and providing peace of mind that they will not fall in on you.

Lift restrictors (sometimes referred to as limit stops or ventlocks) are an optional safety feature, allowing you to limit the distance your sliding sash window is able to open. Perfect for keeping children and little fingers safe, it also restricts the opening space a potential intruder could use to enter your home should you wish to keep your sliding sash window ajar for ventilation overnight. Choose from your preference of key locking sash restrictors or push button sash restrictors with double stage keeps.
